Understanding My Award
How to Accept/Reduce/Cancel Awards
Once you have been admitted to the university you should receive login information to access Self-service Banner (SSB) and the Davenportal. If you have not received a login contact your Admissions Representative for more information and/or a temporary login.
All Grants and Scholarship funds will automatically be accepted on your behalf. If you would like to reduce or cancel these funds at any time you may contact your advisor for further instruction on how to do this. If you notice a fund is in the offered status you will need to accept the award in order to receive them.
If you choose to decline a fund that has been offered to you there is no guarantee that the funds will be made available at a later date. You may choose to reduce or increase your loan funds after you have accepted them, if this is the case you will need to complete a Change of Loan Form and submit it to our office for processing.
How to Decline/Reduce Loan After Accepted/Disbursed
Once you decline or reduce an award online you are no longer able to make updates and changes via the Davenportal. If you need to make changes to your loan amount you may do so by completing a Change of Loan Form and submitting it to your advisor to be forwarded to the Financial Aid Processing Center. Be sure to put down the exact amount of the total loan that you would like for the term(s) requested; dont forget to consider the origination fee when making the request.
Prorating Awards
- Its important to remember that when viewing your awards online or via your paper award letter (new students only) the award amounts that you see are based on full-time enrollment. If you know that you will not be attending full-time the majority of your awards will be prorated based on your actual enrollment. Please see your advisor if you would like to determine the exact amount of your awards based on less than full-time (e.g. half-time, 3/4 time, less than half-time) enrollment.
- Some programs require a minimum half-time enrollment per semester. These include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Stafford Loans
- PLUS Loans
- Some of the private/alternative loan (see your lender for details)
- Michigan Tuition Grant (MTG)
- Michigan Competitive Scholarship (MCS)
- All Davenport scholarships, unless specifically noted.
- Some programs require full-time enrollment per semester. These include (but are not necessarily limited to) the following:
- The Gerald R. Ford Memorial Scholarship (requires 15 credit hours per semester)
- Presidents (Charter) scholarship (requires 15 credit hours per semester)
- Athletic scholarships
- Federal SMART grant
Factors That Could Change Your Eligibility for aid
Add, Drop or Withdrawal from a Class
- When registering for classes its important that you register for all classes you intend to take for the entire semester. The Financial Aid Office will award you based on your initial enrollment status. If you then choose to add a course (Session 2) after the drop/add period (enrollment confirmation) some of your grant funds may not increase to include the additional class(es) in your enrollment for aid purposes.
- Its always a good idea to consult with your advisor prior to adding or dropping a class to determine what the effects on your financial aid may be. Click here to review Davenports Refund, Repayment and Withdrawal Policy.
Loan Default Resolution
- If you receive a notice on your SAR (Student aid Report) or from the Financial Aid Office indicating that you are in default with a student loan, this means that the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE), has reported that you are in default on repayment of a student loan. This means that you are ineligible to receive any type of federal, state or Davenport University institutional aid. In order to resolve your default status, you must submit verification that your defaulted loan(s) are either paid-in-full, or in good standing. Acceptable documentation must be in writing and come from the holder of your defaulted loan(s).
- If you are not sure what institution or agency currently holds your defaulted loan(s), you may access the National Student Loan Database (NSLDS) at www.nslds.ed.gov. You will need your USDOE PIN to access the database. If you do not have a PIN, you may request one at www.pin.ed.gov.
- Once in the NSLDS site, you will gain access to a complete history of your student loan borrowing, with the status of each loan and the name of your loan holder(s). Contact information for your holder(s) is contained in your loan detail.
- Once you have received your written documentation, forward it to your Financial Aid Processing Center immediately. Your financial aid file cannot be processed further without this documentation.
Selective Service
- Male students are required by the Federal Government to register for Selective Service.
- If you have not registered, go to the Selective Service web site www.sss.gov
- If you receive a notice on your SAR (Student Aid Report) or from the Financial Aid Office indicating that you have not registered, you should do one of the following:
- Female or male born before 1960
Send a letter to Financial aid office indicating that you are femail or a male born before 1960. Include your full name, Student ID, signature and date you signed the letter. Emails are not acceptable for Federal Government processing. Your file can not be processed further without this documentation.
Send the letter to:
Davenport Financial Aid Office
415 East Fulton St.
Grand Rapids, MI 49503
Male aged between 18 and 25.
Persons in this group are required to be registered for Selective Service in order to be eligible for federal student aid. If you have already done so, you must submit a copy of your Selective Service registration card to the Financial Aid Office
If you have not yet registered, you may either:
a) Correct your Student Aid Report to give the federal processor the permission to forward your information to Selective Service for registration.
b) Register yourself electronically at www.sss.gov and forward your confirmation to your Financial Aid Office.
c) Complete a Selective Service registration form, available at your Post Office, and submit a copy of your registration card to your Financial Aid Processing Center when received. Your financial aid file cannot be processed further until this documentation is received.
Male aged 26 or over.
It is no longer possible for you to register with Selective Service. You must contact the agency at 1-847-688-6888 to request an "advisory letter." Submit this letter to the Financial Aid Office, along with your written explanation of why you did not register with Selective Service during the time you were between ages 18 and 25. We will review your information to see if we can award financial aid to you under the Federal regulations.
Summer Enrollment
At Davenport University the Spring/Summer semester is considered the end of the academic year otherwise known as a trailer term. When awarding grants and scholarships for the Spring/Summer, we are required to award only the aid that was unused during the Fall/Winter semesters. Therefore, as an example, you will find that if you received a Pell Grant and you used the entire award allocation (full-time award) during the Fall/Winter semesters, you will not be eligible for any additional Pell until the start of the next academic year (Fall semester). If you have questions about your remaining eligibility for a specific fund your advisor should be able to assist you with this determination.
Standards of Academic Progress
It is important that you monitor your cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and completion rate to ensure that you meet the minimum requirements needed to continue to receive Title IV aid each year. Review our current policy and standards based on your degree status here.
Special Considerations
At times the information that you were required to report on your FAFSA may not truly reflect your current family situation. While we are required to work within specific guidelines for making such changes the Financial Aid Office is able to make provisions to your income, household size and other extenuation circumstances that may affect your financial aid eligibility. Its important that you provide all necessary and required documentation to assist us in making an appropriate determination. Click here to view the special considerations checklist.
