Federal Grants

Four grants funded by the Federal government are available to help you pay for your DU education. In all cases, Davenport will credit the funds to your student account against tuition, fees and book charges. Grants do not have to be repaid.

Apply for a Federal Grant

Fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can also pick up a FAFSA application from your high school counselor or Davenport advisor.

Eligibility

Eligibility is determined using a standard formula to produce an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number. This number, and whether or not you are eligible for a grant, will appear on your Student Aid Report (SAR).

Pell Grant

This grant is awarded only to students who have not earned a bachelor's degree.

  • Awards range from about $400 to $4,050, based on Federal appropriations. Amounts received depend on several factors, including EFC number, full-time or part-time status and length of time attended during the academic year.
  • For part-time students who are eligible and receive reduced Pell Grant amounts, Davenport will disburse funds according to enrollment status.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)

This grant is awarded only to students with exceptional financial need who have not earned a bachelor's degree.

  • FSEOG is awarded to those with the lowest Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Amounts range from $100 to $4,000 for each school year.
  • Priority is given to students who receive Federal Pell Grants. While the Department of Education guarantees that participating schools will receive funds to pay the Federal Pell Grants for its eligible students, there is no guarantee every eligible student will receive a FSEOG. Students are paid based on funds available.
Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)

The ACG assists high academic achievers with financial need.

  • This grant is awarded to Pell Grant recipients who are U.S. citizens, enrolled full-time as first-year or second-year students in a degree program at an eligible institution, and have completed a rigorous secondary-school program of study. (An official high school transcript is required to document the secondary program requirements.)
  • The award for eligible first-year students, not previously enrolled in an undergraduate program, is $750. The award for second-year students is $1,300. Second-year recipients must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average at the end of the first year.
National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART Grant)

The SMART Grant assists high academic achievers with financial need who chose to major in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, engineering, or in a foreign language determined critical to national security.

  • The grant is awarded to Pell Grant recipients who are U.S. citizens, enrolled full-time as third-year or fourth-year students, enrolled in a critical major (above) at an eligible four-year degree-granting institution, and carry a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  • Eligible students may receive the $4,000 award once in their third year and once in their fourth year.
