Testimonials from recent class participants

Amy Jensen (May 2011) - College of Arts and Sciences

The Assessment Course for Online Teaching has been more intensive than I had imagined. It has stretched me, and that’s good. I have been so focused on it that I have absorbed an incredible amount of information. The work has been positive because it has really prepared me not just to teach, but to strive to be excellent. It has been filled with practical education that I will use, rather than theories.

I talked with two online instructors from other universities, and they were amazed at the amount of work required. They didn’t have such involved discussion boards, nor did they help and encourage the students as much. They in no way got such preparation for teaching. I’m glad we have, and it bodes well for the future of instructional support from DU.

Lynda Walker (May 2011) - College of Business

For me this experience has been rewarding. I put a lot into it, but I also got a lot back. I came into the class with no teaching experience at all and no real specific knowledge about the online learning environment. The very first day I must say I was a bit overwhelmed. There was so much to learn and I really wanted to do well. However, after I researched and answered my first discussion question I received so much encouragement and support from others in the class. This really meant a great deal to me. It didn’t feel competitive, it felt like I was learning with a group of really smart friends ;-)

The discussion board activity taught me so much about today's higher education academic environment and how to be a successful online college instructor. I read every single post and I learned something from each one. I must admit however, the most fun I had in the course was when we got to play the instructor role. I loved answering student complaints, addressing student scenarios, grading papers, giving feedback, creating and using rubrics. That didn’t seem like work at all, I was just having a really good time!
