Davenport University has chosen the Publication Manual of American Psychological Association as the style for referencing and citing of all academic writing and research. The purpose of this manual is “to advance scholarship by setting sound and rigorous standards for scientific communication” (APA, 6th Ed. 2010, xiii). To explain further, there is not only an issue of avoiding bias in terms of language but also the need for understanding appropriate use of other’s research and publications to ensure the proper use of other’s intellectual property. Such can only be accomplished by giving appropriate credit through an in-text citation and a reference page. One other important piece of this manual is to provide writing guidelines for style. These are the guidelines that cover items such as font choice; paragraph spacing; standards for title pages, headings, and reference pages; and proper citation for various types of resources. For example, it is important that students understand the difference between accessing a journal online and an Online only journal that does not have a hard copy publication. The way these are cited and referenced are different.
