When is IRB review required?
IRB review is required whenever an investigator who is affiliated with the institution conducts research with human subjects including the use of survey and interview procedures, the observation of public behavior, or the study of existing data, documents, records, and specimens.
How often does the IRB meet?
The IRB meets monthly. The deadline for submission of materials for review at the IRB meeting is the 1st of the month. For example, applications submitted by the 1st of September will be reviewed at the September IRB meeting. Applications for Exempt review may be submitted at any time and are reviewed on a rolling basis.
The role of the DU Institutional Review Board is to review and approve, when in compliance, all proposed academic research at DU or by DU faculty, staff or students to ensure that the research meets Federal standards for the safety and protection of any human subjects involved in the research.
The Institutional Research Board (IRB) for an institution is a committee mandated by Federal laws to protect the rights and welfare of the human subjects participating in research activities. Compliance is monitored by the Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The law is specific to research conducted or supported by a federal department or agency. However, a majority of research institutions voluntarily apply this regulation (45CFR46 [1]) to all academic research conducted at their site; regardless of status or source of funding. The IRB achieves its primary function, protecting the rights and welfare of subjects participating in research, by educating researchers. An educated researcher makes the IRB’s job easier. Educating researchers about the requirements assists them in complying with the regulations before problems occur.
