Health Information Management Study Abroad Program
Switzerland, France and Belgium
May 31 – June 23, 2013
Overall objective – to expand and strengthen the student’s global awareness and competency in international health information management.
On the local level, all healthcare facilities are requiring students to have training and education in cultural diversity; on the global level, the HIM profession wants graduates to fill needs in international research, privacy and security of information, health record data standards, quality assurance of health data, international classification systems and the development and implementation of electronic health records.
Learning objectives for HIM study abroad

Compare and contrast the privacy and security of health information in the host countries to the United State

Compare and contrast the various components of health information management systems in the host countries to the United States
-
Conduct an international health information management research project and identify the various components of that research project and possible means of investigation to gain global competency in HIM

Compare and contrast the use, development, implementation, and interoperability of the electronic health record in the host countries to the United States

Articulate the value of the study abroad experience in personal professional terms through guided reflection
