Get Started with Health Information Technology (AAS HIT)

If you are not sure of your career direction, but know you have an interest in:

You may want to earn an Associate Degree in Health Information Technology to launch your potential. Health information technicians perform tasks related to:

  • Quality and maintenance of electronic and paper patient medical records
  • Financial reimbursement
  • Decision making
  • Working with clinicians and administrators

You will also participate in a unique virtual lab using state-of-the-art technology and software. This degree qualifies you to sit for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam. 

Technicians are employed by many facets of the health care industry, such as:

  • Health care facilities and providers

  • Pharmaceutical companies 
  • Software companies
  • Researchers

The AAS program offers classroom and online learning from any of our 11 campuses, but must be completed online or at the Livonia campus. It is an ideal stepping-stone for our Bachelor of Science Health Information Management program to open greater potential and earning capacity for students who choose to go further.

Davenport’s AAS HIT and BS HIM degrees are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM).

Full Curriculum

ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE  •  75 CREDITS  •  HLT INFO AAS

This program, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), prepares the individual to analyze, manage, and utilize patient care data and health information resources.  Students in the program utilize the American Health Information Management Association’s Virtual Lab which provides students with a learning experience that uses state-of-the-art technology and software.  Graduates will have an understanding of coding information for reimbursement and research, standards and regulations regarding health information and managing medical records and health care information.  Graduates from accredited HIT programs are employed throughout the health care industry in hospitals, ambulatory care facilities, physician practices, managed care organizations, insurance companies, consulting and law firms—any organization that collects and uses health information.

Students may begin the HIT program at any of the identified locations, but must complete the program at the Livonia location or online. Students successfully completing this CAHIIM-accredited program are eligible to take the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).  Students desiring to go on to complete the B.S. in Health Information Management must successfully complete HINT297 and HINT297C prior to progressing into the B.S. major.
