Mark Ewing

Public Safety Manager: Lettinga, Broodmoor

Mark began working for Davenport University in July of 2011 as a Public Safety Officer at our campus in Lansing. Mark transferred to the W.A. Lettinga campus in April of 2012 and assumed his current role in July of 2013. Mark is responsible for the Public Safety operations at our W.A. Lettinga Campus, the Peter C. Cook Center, and our other satellite locations throughout the Grand Rapids area.

Prior to working at Davenport University, Mark worked for a contact security firm for over 4 years. There he held various positions including Security Officer, Lead Security Officer, and Security Supervisor. Mark specialized in providing security for transportation operations, and supervised a team of officers at a mass transit center. Additionally, Mark supervised a security team serving an athletic/entertainment facility with crowds in excess of 12000 people. Mark is trained in the incident command system, crowd management, and is certified in the REID Interview and Interrogation Technique. Mark also serves as one of Davenport University’s RAD instructors.

In his free time, Mark volunteers with Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force. In addition to mentoring teenagers in the cadet program, Mark is a trained aircrew member for their search and rescue operations.




Christopher Schoenberg

Public Safety Manager: Lansing, Holland, Flint, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Warren, Livonia, Midland, Saginaw

Chris Schoenberg has been at Davenport University since May 2012. He began as a Public Safety Officer assigned to the Lansing Campus, and assumed his current role in July of 2013. Chris is responsible for the Public Safety operations at the Lansing, Holland, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Flint, Warren, Midland, Saginaw, and Livonia campuses.

Prior to coming to Davenport, Chris worked for a contract security firm. There, Chris served a variety of clients, including Davenport University. Chris also served 4 years as a Nuclear Weapons Specialist in the US Air Force. He was stationed in Minot, ND where he maintained the ACM and ALCM nuclear cruise missiles, as well as the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles. Chris earned many awards during his military service, including; Basic Training Honor Graduate, Tech School Distinguished Graduate, Senior Airman Below the Zone, and multiple recognitions for outstanding performance during Inspections and Exercises. Chris is pursuing a Finance degree at Davenport and brings with him a 3.5 GPA and Associates Degree from Lansing Community College.









Greg Richardson

Public Safety Officer

Greg started working for Davenport University on May 2, 2011 as a Public Safety officer at the Flint Campus. Prior to coming to Davenport University, Greg was employed with Loomis Armored Services as an Armed Service Technician.

For the past 7 years Greg has worked as a volunteer Firefighter for Mount Morris Twp. Station One. His training and qualifications include Firefighter 1 and 2, Pump operator, and Hazmat training. Greg also graduated Emergency medical technician school.

Outside of work Greg enjoys spending time with his Wife and child. He also loves to go hunting, fishing, and sport shooting.



Ron Rutherford

Public Safety Officer

Ron has been with Davenport University over 23 years as a Public Safety Officer at the Flint Campus. Before coming to Davenport, Ron served 29 years in the Flint Police Department, retiring at the rank of Sergeant and Commander of the Vice Squad.

Ron is a graduate from Mott Community College and Northern Michigan University. Ron has been married to his wife for 43 years.






W Larry Hanlin

Public Safety Officer

Larry has worked for Davenport University since August 2012 as a Public Safety Officer at the Holland Campus. He is a graduate of Wayne State University where he earned a BGS degree in Humanistic Studies. Additionally, he earned 25 credit hours at Macomb Community College in criminal justice/law enforcement.

Prior to his employment at Davenport, Larry was an officer with the Detroit Police Department for 20 years. He is the recipient of numerous commendations and ribbons including: 2 Chief’s Unit Awards, and a written resolution presented to him by the Detroit City Council for his organization of the Detroit Police Civilian Radio Patrol Program which involved over 1200 civilian volunteer participants.

During his career as a police officer, Larry worked in various section of the Detroit Police Department, including: Uniformed Patrol, Mini-Station Administrative Unit, Executive Deputy Chief’s Staff, and Chief’s Staff/Community Services Division. Larry also instructed at the Detroit Police Academy where he taught Crime Prevention Concepts and Police/Community Relations to new recruits. A portion of his crime prevention training was received at the National Crime Prevention Institute, University of Kentucky, Louisville, KY. Larry was an active member of the Michigan Crime Prevention Association for several years while on the Detroit Police Department, and served as a parliamentarian for the 3 years.

An avid traveler, Larry has traveled to many parts of the world, including Madagascar, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Russia, Central America, Hong Kong, and a variety of European destinations. In his free time, Larry enjoys running for charity. “Miles for Hope – Moving Toward a Cure for Brain Cancer”, remains one of this chosen causes. Larry also enjoys food (both consuming and preparing) and has taken culinary classes in Italy and Thailand. 



Matt Martinez

Public Safety Officer

Matt has been a Public Safety Officer for Davenport University since January 2015, and has gone through the proper training since then to become a valuable Public Safety Officer for years to come at the University. Matt attended Grand Rapids Community College and is now going to be taking classes at Davenport for a degree in accounting.

In his free time Matt rides freestyle BMX and is sponsored by 42 North bike shop in Holland, Michigan. Other than that hiking, fishing, and basketball take up the rest of his free time. 






Terry Feichtenbiner

Public Safety Officer

Terry Feichtenbiner has been a Public Safety Officer at Davenport University since January 2014. Prior to being hired by Davenport, Terry worked for a contract security firm, servicing the Lansing Campus.

Terry attended Ferris State University and served with the Michigan Army National Guard. Terry completed an apprenticeship program at General Motors for the Sheet Metal Die Maker Trade,  and also worked for GM in computer maintenance management and as an Emergency Response Team Assistant Chief. He has held positions with the Sports Car Club of America’s West Michigan Region, including that of Emergency Services Chief.

Terry is married, with two grown sons. He enjoys working on modern firearms, automobile racing and watching ice hockey.






Michael Zahari

Public Safety Officer

Mike began working at Davenport University in December of 2005 as a Security Services Officer at our Dearborn Campus. Mike transferred to the Livonia Campus in September 2008, when the facility opened.

Prior to working at Davenport University, Mike worked as a Security Officer for Ford Motor Company at the massive Rouge Complex, in Dearborn, MI. Mike also served as personal bodyguard to Henry Ford II, William Clay Ford, and Lee Iaccoca. Mike is a distinguished Vietnam Veteran and Bronze Star recipient. Mike is also a life member of the VFW.

In his free time, Mike likes spending time with his family. Mike has a son and daughter, and one Grandson. Mike loves to travel and has seen 26 of the 50 states.






Thomas G. Reeder

Public Safety Officer

Tom has worked for Davenport University, Saginaw Campus, for sixteen years, beginning when the campus was called Great Lakes Jr. College. Tom began his career in Police/Security in 1965 with the Saginaw Police Department. Tom attended Delta College and also served as an instructor.  He taught in the Criminal Justice Program, instructing in the Recruit and Advanced Criminal Investigation Schools. His areas of expertise included; Crime Scene Photography, Crime Scene Search and Seizure, Fingerprinting, Ballistics, and Tool Mark Identification.  Tom is a graduate of the Institute of Applied Science, Chicago, Illinois.

Tom was selected as Police Officer of the Year for the City of Saginaw for 1976.  He received the award for solving fourteen homicides, with a closure rate of 100 percent.  A “cold case” murder that he worked on for decades resulted in the conviction of the offender, who is now serving a life sentence.  This case also received national media attention, with coverage on the Discovery and NBC television networks.

After Tom retired from his distinguished career with the Saginaw Police Department, he served as a court officer with the Saginaw County Sheriff Department.  Tom also pursued a career as a licensed private investigator. 





Kim Hartuniewicz

Public Safety Officer

Kim began working for Davenport University in Nov of 2013 and is assigned to the afternoon shift. Kim brings with her 17 years of experience as a certified police officer. She started her career with the East Lansing Police Department before transferring to the Grand Rapids Police Department. While with Grand Rapids, Kim served in a variety of roles including a tour as a K9 handler.

Kim holds an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Grand Rapids Community College. Additionally, Kim is certified in CPR/First Aid/AED, Pressure Points and Control Tactics, Hostage Negotiation, Firearms, and the training of military/police dogs.

In her free time, Kim enjoys hunting, fishing, and touring Michigan Vineyards. She also volunteers for Paws With A Cause. 



Rob Hollemans

Public Safety Officer

Rob Hollemans has been a Public Safety Officer with Davenport University since June 2012 at the Lettinga Campus. He is a certified instructor in Pressure Points and Control Tactics (PPCT) and Raqpe and Aggression Defense (RAD). 
Prior to joining Davenport University, Rob worked at Spectrum Health for 28 years with their security team holding positions of Officer, K-9 Officer, Security Police Officer, Sergeant and Lieutenant.
Rob is married and has four children. He enjoys family vacations, wine tasting with his wife and friends and is an avid sports fan.



Dennis Richards

Public Safety Officer

Dennis Richards was hired in August 2014, at the W.A. Lettinga Campus in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Dennis has a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Ferris State University graduating with honors. Additionally, he is a graduate of the Center for Public Safety, Police Staff and Command, Northwestern University, and has attended numerous leadership courses.

Dennis has over thirty three years of Law Enforcement experience, with the last thirty one year’s serving with the Grandville Police Department. His last twelve years were as a road patrol sergeant. As a sergeant he had a number of operational and administrative responsibilities. He has experience as a Field Training Officer (FTO), experience in critical incidents management, crime scene investigations and management, community policing, and policy development to name a few. Additionally, he is an instructor in Managing Civil Actions (RIOT CONTROL).

Prior to his Law Enforcement career, he spent four years in the United States Navy in San Diego, CA. He completed two overseas deployments and was discharged under Honorable conditions.

He likes spending his spare time with family and his hobbies include:  fishing, photography, wood working, and camping. Additionally, he is member of the Kent County Veteran Honor Guard.


Ronald S. Ortega

Public Safety Officer

Ron is a Public Safety Officer with Davenport University, His varied career includes; Law Enforcement;  Security Supervision; Safety Coordinator; Loss Prevention Management; Executive Protection; Director of Safety & Security. & Management of multi-functional work teams.

Ron received his formal education at the Grand Valley State University in the Criminal Justice and Occupational Safety & Health Management Disciplines.; and received his Security Specialist Certification from Grand Rapids Community College.  Ron also served as a Security Curriculum Consultant for Baker College.

As a true practitioner, Ron believes in hard work, he motivates himself and those around him to do their best.  He strives to be a positive role model who is dedicated to his work.  Ron maintains high standards for himself as well as those he works with, always quietly providing the necessary support to help his peers succeed.



Brian Taylor

Public Safety Officer

Brian has been with Davenport University since December of 2011, and is currently assigned to the night shift at the W.A. Lettinga campus.

Brian has an AAS in Computer Network Systems, and is currently pursuing a BS in Information Systems Security. Brian has 10 years of experience, and worked for Spectrum Health’s security team before coming to Davenport University. He is also a veteran of the United States Army. Brian is certified in Individual Crisis Intervention and Peer Support, and is trained as a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) member. 



Jackie Martinez

Public Safety Officer

Jackie began working for DU as a part-time Public Safety Officer at the Holland location in June 2014. In January 2015, Jackie transferred to the W.A. Lettinga campus to work as a full-time Public Safety Officer.

Jackie is a graduate of the Grand Rapids Community College Police Academy and holds her degree in Criminal Justice and her certification in Law Enforcement. Jackie spent time during her schooling as an intern with the Zeeland Police Department. 

During her free time, Jackie enjoys playing and watching hockey and is an avid Chicago Blackhawks fan. Jackie also likes playing baseball, traveling, kayaking, golfing, and fishing. 


Chris Sullivan

Andrew Roman

Public Safety Officer

Andrew has been a Public Safety Officer at the Warren campus since March 2013.  Prior to joining Davenport, Andrew had worked in the security industry for a number of years, affording him the opportunity to perform a variety of tasks and gain a wealth of knowledge.  Andrew is a graduate of Schoolcraft College and Northwood University.  Outside of work, Andrew likes to spend time with his family and also enjoys running, disc golfing and other outdoor activities.  





Josh Parsons

Public Safety Officer

After eight months of service as a contract officer at the Davenport Midland Campus, Josh was hired by Davenport University in November of 2014 to serve as their day shift Public Safety Officer.

Josh brings to Davenport a variety of both security and criminal justice experience having worked in hospital security, law enforcement, and corrections.  Josh is a graduate of Michigan State University and holds a BA in Criminal Justice.

In addition to working for Davenport, Josh holds a part time position at his Church, St. John’s Lutheran, where he serves as a vicar (pastor in training).  Josh is a student at Concordia Theological Seminary Fort Wayne and hopes to be ordained as a Pastor in the near future.  Josh is married and has four children.



Aaron Rodden

Public Safety Officer

Aaron Rodden started working for Davenport as a contract security officer in June 2013. He was hired in November 2014 to be the night shift officer directly for Davenport University's Public Safety Department. He is currently in college and working on his BS in criminal justice with a concentration in criminal psychology. He has served his community and country in many capacities and continues to do so.

He plans on furthering his education in law enforcement and as a medical first responder. He currently is also employed for Securitas as an industrial emergency first responder, responding to fires, medical emergencies and hazmat incidents. He enjoys spending time with his Wife Laci, two children, and his German Shepherd Guinevere. He enjoys being outdoors or out in the community doing something for a cause.
