Volunteer Opportunity with Hospice for Healthcare Students

We have a great new opportunity here at Spectrum Health Hospice that may very well interest you. One of the primary goals of our care team is to ensure that our patients and families are supported and comfortable 24/7. We want our patients and families to be confident that we are anticipating their every need and have a watchful eye out for them. To provide this reassurance for patients and their caregivers, we are beginning our volunteer Tuck In Program.

The main focus is to ensure that each patient is indeed “tucked in” for the weekend and have everything they need. We are proud to have wonderful staff available during the night and on weekends to meet any unanticipated needs in a timely manner; however, our goal is always to prevent crisis and assure our families that we will do everything we can to avoid any urgent situation. Our Tuck In volunteers can help us touch base with every single patient we serve to assure them that we are there for them, working deliberately to ensure their comfort.

The spring volunteer training session will be held at our office which is located at 4500 Breton Rd SE in Kentwood.  The training will run for 5 consecutive Tuesday evenings from 6:00pm – 9:00pm.The dates for the trainings are April 24, May 1, 8, 15 and 22. at Spectrum Health Hospice office, 4500 Breton Rd, Kentwood, MI 49508 to prepare the volunteers to work in the program.

For more information, please contact Marcia Good or Yvonne Elliot at 616.391.4240 or email at hospice.volunteers@spectrumhealth.org.

Volunteers need to prepare taxes for low income individuals.

What is VITA?

  • VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
  • The IRS partners with communities and universities to provide free tax preparation services for low income families, seniors, and the disabled.
  • Last year our collegiate partnership served over 2500 clients who received over $4.6 million in refunds.

Students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to participate in this year's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for the 2012 tax season. We need volunteers to prepare taxes, greet clients, translate for Hispanic clients, and distribute flyers to prospective clients. Our tax season will officially begin on January 24th and run through April 17, 2012 but we advertise in advance of the season.  To become a VITA, simply fill out a volunteer application and submit to Judy Knapp.

Contact: Judy Knapp   judy.knapp@davenport.edu; 616-871-3979
Judy can also answer questions about VITA opportunities across the state. Many accounting and finance students have found their VITA experience helpful in increasing their tax knowledge and skills and it has been beneficial in securing internships and
jobs. Although we love our accounting and finance students, anyone can volunteer for VITA and provide
this useful community service.
