International Spring Break Program in Cuba with First-Hand Aid

A faculty-led program over spring break to Havana, Cuba.

Faculty:       Amy Stahley, Department chair, Nursing

Location:     Havana, Cuba

Date:           TBD

Program: Faculty-led Spring Break Program. In collaboration with First-Hand Aid (www.firsthandaid.org), a non-profit based in Grand Rapids, DU Nursing students enrolled in NURS 427C (Community Health Nursing Clinical) will travel to Cuba and deliver medical supplies to Cuban hospitals and clinics. Students will have opportunities to interact with medical staff and patients and perform service for families and senior citizens in clinical settings. DU students and faculty will accompany Marc Bohland, Executive Director of First-Hand Aid, on the trip to Cuba.  Members of the community may also participate. DU students will learn about Cuban culture as well and have opportunities to use Spanish.  Accommodations are with Cuban families in Bed and Breakfasts.

Goals:   To create a program addressing the intercultural and global competency needs of Nursing students and to offer an opportunity to perform service for families in need.  Nursing students may attend other DU study abroad programs and have opportunities to perform service and study medical Spanish through the current Costa Rica summer program.  However, this program represents a unique opportunity to imbed study abroad in a currently running and required course. Students also learn about non-profit organizations.

Course: Nursing 427C – Community Health Nursing Clinical. Not all students enrolled in winter 2012 would participate, but those who do will pursue the learning outcomes of the course and have unique opportunities to compare and contrast community health care in Michigan and Cuba.  Marc Bohland of First-Hand Aid and DU’s Study Abroad Office will assist with providing pre-departure orientations.

Faculty director:  Amy Stahley, MSN, RN.  Program sponsorship and directorship: Marc Bohland, Executive Director and Co-founder of First-Hand Aid

Cost per student:  In 2011, Program was approximately $2,200 (includes housing, food estimate, in-country transportation, airfare, visa fee). 2013 estimate being calculated.
