Did You Know…

  • The U.S. Constitution was written in the Pennsylvania State House, Independence Hall, the same place where the Declaration of Independence was signed and where George Washington received his commission as Commander of the Continental Army.
  • The U.S. Constitution is the oldest written Constitution of any nation on Earth.
  • More than 11,000 amendments to the U.S. Constitution have been introduced in Congress! However, only 33 have gone to the states for ratification and 27 actually became amendments to the Constitution.
  • The Constitution states that all bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives. It is customary for appropriations bills to begin in the House as well (Article I, section 7).
  • When the House and Senate pass a joint resolution, it has the same power as an act and must be signed by the President. A presidential veto can be overridden.
  • A concurrent resolution is not a law but an expression of facts, opinions, principles, or concerning their procedures.
  • The first national Thanksgiving Day was established by George Washington on November 26, 1789 as a way to “give thanks’ for the Constitution.
