Dr. Carey has over 36 years of experience in the business world including extensive experience in sales and marketing. In addition, his academic accomplishments in business and marketing supplement to provide expertise in leadership, strategic planning, organizational management, organizational structure, marketing, value chain optimization, data analytics, and sales. This expertize serves him well and supports his capacity as the Department Chair of Marketing and the Interim Program Chair of the EMBA, MBA, and MM programs.
Professional experience includes two years in a sales position with Harvey Lexus of Grand Rapids building customer relationships and implementing a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) program to enhance sales effectiveness. Dr. Carey served sixteen years with the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company in Field Sales and Marketing. During this time, Dr. Carey managed and directed staff to implement and execute RJR programs and policies at the retail level and represented RJR to wholesale, retail, and vending customers in specific geographic areas. Prior to these experiences, Dr. Carey worked eighteen years in Operations Management with Bill Knapp’s\' Restaurants. During his tenure with Bill Knapp’s, Dr. Carey was involved in all aspects of restaurant operations, including site selection, construction, staffing, opening, and the operations to serve customer expectations effectively and efficiently. For a seven-year time span, he was responsible for all restaurant operations for six locations.
Dr. Carey began his academic work experience in 1997 creating and facilitating seminars for industry clients of Aquinas College. He began his post-secondary teaching experiences with Davenport University in 1998 and the University of Phoenix in 1999. In addition, at the University of Phoenix, Dr. Carey served as Area Chair for Marketing. Dr. Carey taught marketing courses for Grand Valley University in 2008, and in 2009, Dr. Carey became the Department Coordinator for Management, Marketing, Human Resource Management, and General Business courses at the Lettinga Campus of Davenport University. In 2001, Dr. Carey became the Department Chair for Marketing at Davenport University.
In the public sector, Dr. Carey served the City of Kentwood on the Zoning Board of Appeals from 1997 to 2001 and on the Planning Commission from 1998 to 2001. He served on the Board of Directors of the Crystal Springs Country Club and was President of the Crystal Springs Property Owners Association from 2004 to 2007.
