Programming Criteria

As a legacy endowment, emphasis is placed on connecting the unique heritage of Davenport University with ideas designed to make meaningful and lasting impact.

Initiatives should substantively enhance the experience and effectiveness of a Davenport education, offering clear advantages and opportunities for those earning their degrees at this institution. Proposals will be evaluated on their potential to advance key organizational strategies, either already in place or under consideration. Ideas may also introduce new concepts designed to reinforce Davenport’s position and performance in higher learning. Of particular value to the assessment process is the degree to which an initiative:

  • Offers new (or expanded) opportunities for research, scholarship and instructional effectiveness;
  • Proposes new fields of inquiry or practice;
  • Actively and demonstrably enriches the communities and business environments served by Davenport campuses;
  • Shows exceptional potential for addressing emerging needs/challenges.

Eligibility for endowment support is offered to all Davenport campuses and is intended to fund initiatives outside of normal operating budgets.

Today’s Davenport University originated in 1866 as Grand Rapids Business College. In 1910 M.E. Davenport assumed leadership, and devoted 50 years to developing the school’s mission of high quality preparation for the workplace. From modest beginnings in single buildings, Davenport grew into a full residential campus in the Heritage Hill section of Grand Rapids. As Davenport University, it established its present campus in 2005, and continues to expand. Since the 1950s, Davenport has been an educational leader across lower Michigan, in Lansing, Warren, Midland, Holland, Kalamazoo, and other locations.
