Medical Assisting Associate of Applied Science Program Description:
The program is designed to prepare competent entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. Students are prepared in the basics of patient care, basic laboratory practices, and medical office procedures. In addition, students will have developed their interpersonal communication skills and acquired a foundation in both psychology and cultural diversity. Upon completion of course work and the practicum, students are eligible to take the certification exam of the American Association of Medical Assistants (CMA) and/or the American Medical Technologist Exam (RMA). Medical Assisting is a laddered program allowing students to complete the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Medical Assisting, and eventually complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Services Administration or Medical Case Management. At select campuses, an option for the Medical Assisting program is to complete a phlebotomy concentration, becoming eligible to sit for an additional phlebotomy certification exam.
Length of Program: 61 Credit hours
The purpose of the phlebotomy option is to prepare students to function as phlebotomists whose responsibilities include venipuncture and blood draw micro-collection techniques. Such procedures are performed on patients of all ages at clinics, hospital labs, intensive care units, outpatient care centers, and nursing homes. In addition to coursework, phlebotomy students who have fulfilled a minimum of 120 hours in clinical practicum and have successfully performed 100 venipunctures and 25 capillary punctures are eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Technologists, Phlebotomy Technician Certification exam.

This program requires 180 hour practicum for Medical Assisting and an additional 120 hour practicum for phlebotomy.

Medical Assisting Program Objectives:
Upon completion of the Medical Assisting Program, a student is expected to be able to:
- Successfully demonstrate effective communication verbally and non-verbally with patients, families, and healthcare professionals in various environments utilizing active listening, interviewing, instruction of procedures and patient education, and documentation skills.
- Apply critical thinking and knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, mathematics, pharmacology, and pathophysiology in the performance of clinical procedures and administrative functions to ensure safe and effective care of patients in the practice setting.
- Utilize critical thinking, effective time management, cultural sensitivity, professionalism, and ethical decision-making in the medical business practice setting using current technology in order to integrate clinical workflow and business strategies.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills to identify, prioritize, and mitigate ethical dilemmas while providing patient care in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations, policies, and laws while upholding patient rights.
- Exhibit critical thinking based on knowledge of academic subject matter required for competence in the medical assisting profession including accurately calculating and administering medication dosages, performing laboratory testing and interpreting data for safe and effective patient care.
- Incorporate cognitive knowledge in performing in the psychomotor and affective domains in the practice of medical assisting, applying quality control measures in following health and safety policies and procedures to prevent illness and injury.
Criminal Background Check and Drug Screen Policy:
All students in the Davenport University College of Health Professions (the "COHP") are required to submit to criminal background check and drug screening (collectively, the "Testing") at the time of declaring a major in the COHP. The results of the Testing (the "Results"), which shall remain confidential, shall be used by the COHP to approve or disapprove of a Student for enrollment or continued enrollment in the COHP, and/or eligibility for training programs, clinical or practicum. The Testing shall be completed by registering for the appropriate course and completing the entire testing process in the course. Each student is responsible for acknowledging and explaining positive Result(s) after completing the process. A student will be dismissed from the COHP if he or she refuses to consent to the Testing. The cost of the Testing is the part of the course fee and is the responsibility of the student.
Admission to the University does NOT guarantee admission to the Medical Assisting Program. Students wishing to enter the Medical Assisting Program should indicate their intention when first applying for enrollment at Davenport University. To be admitted to the Medical Assisting Program, the student MUST meet the following criteria:

- Successful completion of the following pre-Medical Assisting Courses with a C grade or higher:
- BIOL115 – Anatomy and Physiology with Human Disease I
- BIOL116 – Anatomy and Physiology with Human Disease II
- HLTH101 – Introduction to Health Careers (including mandatory CBC & DS)
- HLTH110 – Medical Terminology
- HLTH220 – Pharmacology
- Complete and sign the Limited Enrollment Form for Medical Assisting Program (see below or the COHP Handbook Appendix A-10).
Health Requirement Information
Medical Assisting students can expect to lift more than 50 pounds at any one time, spend several hours standing, be able to move quickly, appropriately handle stressful situations, and function as a member of the health care delivery team.
