What is the Registered Nurse Primary Care (RNPC) initiative

The RN Primary Care (RNPC) initiative is an innovative partnership between Davenport University (DU) and the Battle Creek Veterans Affairs (VA) Wyoming VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC). This unique partnership will provide student nurses with exposure to primary care nursing and to the specialized needs of our nation’s military veterans. Students will gain specialized nursing knowledge and skills working alongside experienced primary care RNs and other members of the Wyoming VA CBOC health care teams. Students will also be exposed to the variety of nursing career opportunities in primary care and within the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

What are the requirements?

This is a two-year commitment during the junior and senior years of the BSN-PL program. Sophomore level BSN-PL students can apply after completing the Wyoming VA CBOC observation during their mental health clinical rotation. Participants will be required to complete self-study and additional learning formats to include a Community Based Ambulatory Primary Care (CBAPC) health care course, veteran-specific care competencies, Green Zone military cultural sensitivity training, and mindfulness instruction.

Do I have to have military experience or knowledge?

Participants are not required to have prior military knowledge or experience.

Are there scholarships available?

Students accepted into the RNPC initiative may be eligible for scholarship funds and must be in good financial standing with Davenport University.

Nursing requirements and clinical

Students must be in good academic standing at the completion of their sophomore BSN-PL year. Upon acceptance to the RNPC initiative, students will participate in concurrent clinical experiences at the Wyoming VA CBOC during their junior and senior years.

Must I work in the VA after graduation?

Graduates of the RNPC initiative will not be required to work in the VA upon graduation. Participants will complete a 12-week, 40 hour/week paid externship at the Wyoming VA CBOC during the summer between their junior and senior years. This externship will provide unique opportunities in primary and military veteran health care working alongside experienced primary care RN's who are practicing to the full extent of their training.

Am I required to be a Davenport student in order to participate in the RNPC Initiative?

Yes. Students must be current BSN-PL students at Davenport University. If you are interested in applying to Davenport University, please refer to the BSN-PL admissions requirements. Click here.
